Imaging radar observations and nonlocal theory of large-scale plasma waves in the equatorial electrojet

چکیده
Abstract. Large-scale ( 1 km) waves in the daytime and nighttime equatorial electrojet are studied using coherent scatter radar data from Jicamarca. Images of plasma irregularities within the main beam of the radar are formed using interferometry with multiple baselines. These images are analyzed according to nonlocal gradient drift instability theory and are also compared to nonlinear computer simulations carried out recently by Ronchi et al. [1991] and Hu and Bhattacharjee [1999]. In the daytime, the large-scale waves assume a non-steady dynamical equilibrium state characterized by the straining and destruction of the waves by shear and diffusion followed by spontaneous regeneration as predicted by Ronchi et al. [1991]. At night, when steep plasma density gradients emerge, slowly propagating large-scale vertically extended waves predominate. Eikonal analysis suggests that these waves are trapped (absolutely unstable) or are nearly trapped (convectively unstable) and able tunnel between altitude regions which are locally unstable. Intermediate-scale waves are mainly transient (convectively stable) but can become absolutely unstable in narrow altitude bands determined by the background density profile. These characteristics are mainly consistent with the simulations presented by Hu and Bhattacharjee [1999]. A new class of large-scale primary waves is found to occur along bands that sweep westward and downward from high altitudes through the E region at twilight.

Evidence and effects of a wave-driven nonlinear current in the equatorial electrojet
Ionospheric two-stream waves and gradient-drift waves nonlinearly drive a large-scale (D.C.) current in the E-region ionosphere. This current flows parallel to, and with a comparable magnitude to, the fundamental Pedersen current. Evidence for the existence and magnitude of wave-driven currents derives from a theoretical understanding of E region waves, supported by a series of nonlinear 2-D si...

The spatial and temporal variations of various parameters associated with plasma wave turbulence in the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) at the magnetic equatorial location of Trivandrum (8.5 N, 77 E; dip 0.5 N) are studied for the first time, using co-located HF (18 MHz) and VHF (54.95 MHz) coherent backscatter radar observations (daytime) in the altitude region of 95–110 km, mostly on magnetically...
متن کاملEffects of large horizontal winds on the equatorial electrojet
The effects of large winds on the low-latitude E region ionosphere and the equatorial electrojet in particular are analyzed theoretically, computationally, and experimentally. The principles that govern the relationship between electric fields, currents, and winds in steady flows in the ionosphere are reviewed formally. A three-dimensional numerical model of low latitude ionospheric electrostat...
متن کاملMultiscale equatorial electrojet turbulence: Energy conservation, coupling, and cascades in a baseline 2-D fluid model
Progress in understanding the coupling between plasma instabilities in the equatorial electrojet based on a unified fluid model is reported. Simulations with parameters set to various ionospheric background conditions revealed properties of the gradient-drift and Farley-Buneman instabilities. Notably, sharper density gradients increase linear growth rates at all scales, whereas variations in cr...
متن کاملUp-down asymmetry of type I plasma waves in the equatorial electrojet region
The up-down asymmetry of the type I plasma waves in the equatorial electrojet region during daytime is investigated. It is shown that the asymmetry is exhibited not only in the vertical direction but also is manifested in the oblique direction (24.6° o zenith). The results further indicate the eect of neutral winds on the phase velocities of type I plasma waves.
